Media Release: IAG - The Buzz Insurance, Monday, September 14, 2009
Family comes first for Australians with new research showing 50% of us think the best moments of our lives are family-related whether it's having a baby, getting married or simply spending time with loved ones.
Of those family moments, the Newspoll study of 1200 people showed 25% of Australians think having a baby is the best moment of their life (although women are slightly more babyfocused at 30% than their male counterparts at 21%).
Other family moments included a marriage or anniversary at 10%, spending time with family at 9% and our relationship with our significant other at 4%.
The research was undertaken by Insurance Australia Group's (IAG) new online car insurer The Buzz and asked Australians to share what they considered to be the Best 60 Seconds in their lives. It was done by The Buzz to gain a better understanding of what people truly value in their lives.
CEO, The Buzz, Jacki Johnson said Australians feel that insurance companies don't value their time and hence make it hard and time-consuming for them to get a quote or make a claim.
"We know that life is made up of lots of special moments for people but these can differ depending on life stage and priorities. By understanding what people value, we can improve the insurance experience and tailor it for individuals," she said.
"At The Buzz, we want people to enjoy the things that really matter to them and that's why we're pushing online frontiers to offer fast and easy insurance," she said.
Travel and holiday experiences also rated highly as the best moments with 17% of those surveyed giving them the nod. However, these experiences rated higher among single Australians (22%) and those without children (20%) compared to married Australians (13%) and people with children (14%).
The research also confirmed how much some Aussie men love their sport with 4% naming a personal sporting moment - sinking a golf ball, sky-diving or winning a game of footy - as their biggest buzz compared to only 1% of women.
Ms Johnson said that surprisingly significant birthdays, achievements and acquiring major assets paled in comparison to special family and travel moments.
"We all know Australians love a party, but birthday milestones and achievements like graduating, getting your first job, getting a big promotion or buying a house don't hold a candle to being with family or getting out and enjoying the world," she said.
What people said are their best moments
Women on babies "The birth of my first born, my eldest daughter. The first time you've ever had a baby it's exactly like a miracle and she was exactly like I thought she would be."
Men on marriage "My marriage to my wife. Because without that we wouldn't have my two beautiful girls."
Travel "Dancing with the girls in the Moulin Rouge in Paris in 1992." "When I went to Vegas a few years ago to play poker."
Sport "Winning the Group One race at Caulfield." "Probably seeing my golf ball go down the hole."
Other Best 60 Seconds "Coming back to life after a heart attack." "Coming back from overseas after a war." "The day I shook hands with my boss and retired." "Good rain we're farmers."
