It’s been described as the biggest breakthrough in driver safety since seatbelts. What is Electronic Stability Control and why will it reduce your car insurance premiums?
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is a type of active cruise control (demonstrated above). Sensors monitor a car’s speed, steering angle and its vertical axis to rapidly intervene in a potential crash.
ESC can correct sliding on slippery surfaces, prevent a car from rolling because of sudden swerving, and maintain a car’s direction in a situation where you might normally loose steering control. It does this by automatically braking individual wheels and cutting engine power to maintain control.
The life-saving potential of ESC cannot be understated. It has been credited with reducing certain types of car crash by 45%, resulting in cars fitted with ESC now being cheaper to insure.
The technology is being developed by different electronics suppliers to car companies around the world. Different car manufacturers call it different things including ASTC, DSC, DSTC, PSM, StabiliTrack, VDC, VSA and VSC.
