1. Prepare! Make sure you know how to get to the destination. Get the exact address, a map or set your GPS before you set off. And charge your mobile phone.
2. Is your car ready? When was the last time your car was serviced? Check the condition of the battery and tyres (and make sure you have a decent extra tyre). If you’re travelling to a remote location that’s beyond your car’s fuel range, check the location of service stations along the route, particularly if travelling late at night or on public holidays.
3. Tell a friend or family member about your plans - where you’re going and when you expect to be there.
4. Know your car and its security features. Central locking, interior lights, headlights that can be programmed to stay on to light your path, two stage unlocking and panic alert are just some of these features.
5. Avoid driving at night. Leave early morning, and aim to reach your destination before sunset. Take a break at night if you must continue your journey. If you are forced to travel around dusk or dawn be wary of wildlife, in particular kangaroos and wombats.
6. If you stop, park carefully. Find a well-lit spot or lot. Paid parking lots are a good option. iphone has apps that saves your parking location and navigates you back to it.
7. Pay attention to cars near yours. Be alert and as you head back to your car, is there anyone lurking around your car? Cars pulling out, or just idling? This could be trouble. Have your keys handy. Lock your doors as soon as you get in.
8. Earn good karma some other day. Avoid stopping to help anyone seemingly needing help. It could be a trap to get you to stop, instead keep driving and call emergency for help.
9. Create an In Case of Emergency (ICE) category in your mobile. List people who someone else can contact in case of an emergency, and who you can contact if something happens, like roadside assist or your insurance company.
10. Have a plan if danger appears. If confronted by potential danger, drop your packages and run making lots of noise. If you feel someone is following you, head to a police station or a petrol station.
Have a great trip!
