Pests like cockroaches, termites, rats and mice – and even cute little geckos - aren’t just a nuisance, they can cause significant damage to your home, from spoiling food and chewing through wiring to causing major structural problems.

Here's some simple tips to keep the pests – and the costly problems they can cause – at bay.

• Don’t leave food outside.  Leaving out bird seed, dog and cat food will feed the pets you love – and the pests you don’t!

• If you have a fruit tree or vegetable garden, pick up fallen fruit and remove rotting materials – or they’ll become a haven for unwanted visitors.

• Keep all food and scraps in tightly closed containers.  Where there’s a will there’s a way, and clever creatures will get into your food if you leave it open or in unsealed packages.

• Keep your compost bin closed and make sure rodents can’t tunnel in from underneath.

• Keep lids on your kitchen bins and outside garbage bins and take the rubbish out regularly.

• Mow the grass – keeping your lawn short, your yard tidy by removing junk and debris to take away homes and hiding places for rodents.

• Eliminate pools of water. If water pools in lids and garden pots after rain, tip it onto the garden and you won't attract as many mozzies.

• Seal up gaps around the outside of your house to keep pests out.

• Get a pest inspection. Identify and treat problems like termites – treating a small problem early is better than a large one later.
